Part I: The Men.

Stunning photos capture Spielberg's recreation of the action at Normandy beach, and are shown alongside the historical photos which inspired him. Text is drawn from the words of Churchill, Eisenhower, Bradley, from the letters of real soldiers, historical documents, manuals and maps as well as from the works of the acclaimed historian, Steven Ambrose, who also served as consultant for the movie.

Part II: The Mission.

James' powerful studies of the squad of eight soldiers, led by Tom Hanks, as they try and fulfill their mission are accented by extracts drawn from the screenplay. As the squad, led by Tom Hanks, pushes deep into enemy territory, they find themselves questioning their mission: Is one man worth risking the lives of eight?

Part III: The Movie.

Behind-the-scenes photos of the filmmakers at work-in England at boot camp, on the beaches of Ireland-are combined with interviews with Spielberg actors Hanks, Burns, Sizemore, and others, screenwriter Robert Rodat, producer Ian Bryce, production designer Tom Sanders, and cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski (Schindler's List).

David James is one of the film industry's most respected and talented photographers. Saving Private Ryan marks his third collaboration with Steven Spielberg, following The Lost World:Jurassic Park and the Academy Award® winning film Schindler's List. In addition to Spielberg, James has worked with a long list of distinguished directors including Norman Jewison, Sir Richard Attenborough, Mike Nichols, Bernardo Bertolucci, Barbra Steisand, and Ridley Scott. His work appears regularly in Time, Newsweek, Life, Premiere, The New York Times, and many other publications. This is his fifth book.
